LIONEL J. "LENNY" BERGERONSanfordLionel J. "Lenny" Bergeron, 80, of Sanford, died peacefully on December 1st at the Greenwood Center in Sanford after a brief illness.He was born in Sanford on February 14, 1929, a son of Willie and Alice (Laitres) Bergeron.Lenny was a navy veteran from 1948 to 1952, serving on the USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16), stationed in Key West, FL.For a time he was employed with Eastern Plastics in Sanford. Then for many years, he worked for the US Postal Service until his retirement several years ago. Always one to stay busy, he also worked several part-time jobs including as a summer trolley driver in Wells and Ogunquit, a school bus driver and monitor and most recently as a driver for York County Community Action.He loved to play cards and pool, and especially looked forward to his Saturday night Texas Hold 'Em game with his friends, especially his good friend Bill Elliott.Lenny was a member of the American Legion, the Sanford Elks Lodge and the Springvale Social Club.He was predeceased by his parents, by his wife of 48 years Claire (Champagne) Bergeron, his brother Paul, and his sisters Rachel Ralston and Connie Ramsey.Survivors include 4 daughters, Marguerite Smith and her husband Kevin of Sanford, Mary-Elise Alexandre and her husband Albert of Springvale, Patrice Pierce and her husband Chuck of Waterboro, Melissa Letourneau and her husband Scott of Portland and a son Peter of Augusta. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Ashlee and Alex Smith, Celina and Sarah Alexandre, Haley and Bethany White and Michelle and Chris Pierce.Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford on Thursday from 4-6 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11 AM at the Notre Dame Church of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish in Springvale.
