Dolores Marie Berard died peacefully, with loved ones at her side, at the SMHC Pavilion on March 10, 2015.The first child of Eliodore and Marie Anne (Lussier) Richard, Dolores was born in Saint-Claude, Quebec on April 20, 1920 and baptized in the Catholic Church the next day. She was eight years old when the family moved to the United States.Dolores attended Holy Family School. At age sixteen, she got a job at Goodall Worsted Company. Later, she worked at Jagger Brothers Yarn Mill and remained in their employ for over thirty years. In 1944, Dolores married Leo Paul Berard and the couple had four children. Travel by car was a big part of their lives. Besides frequent trips to Canada, destinations included the 1964 World's Fair in New York, Washington, DC, and cross-country one summer, visiting family, friends, and historic sites along the way. They especially enjoyed a trip to Alaska, where their youngest son was stationed in the U. S. Army.Dolores was always faithful to her Catholic upbringing. As a girl, she belonged to the Children of Mary and as an adult was a lifelong member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne. She volunteered at Holy Family Thrift Shop and she was a member of R.S.V.P. for twenty years. She enjoyed working with others at Sunset Tower each week where they made hand-crafted items to sell at annual fairs, donating the money they raised at Camp Waban's annual telethon. Dolores' specialty was making quilts. In addition to those she donated to be sold or raffled, she made one for each of her children and grandchildren. Dolores' husband Paul died in 1982 after thirty-seven years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her parents and all but one sibling. She is survived by her brother Albert Richard, her children: sons Robert Berard and his wife Sandra, Roger Berard and his wife Kathie, Ronald Berard and his wife Barbara, and daughter Evelyn Proulx and her husband Richard, also thirteen grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Southern Maine Health Care Pavilion and Life Choice Hospice for their dedication to and gentle care of Dolores.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 21 at 10:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, 66 North Avenue, Sanford. Burial will be in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.In lieu of floral remembrances, donations in Dolores' memory may be made to The Pavilion Activities Fund, payable to SMHC Eldercare Activity Fund, ("Pavilion" in memo line), 35 July Street, Sanford ME 04073.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
