Edith E. Benson
Edith Evelyn "Bennie" Benson, 90, a longtime resident of Sanford, died November 11 at the Southridge Living Center in Biddeford after a lengthy illness.She was born in Biddeford on March 5, 1916, the daughter of Joseph F. and Flora M. (Benson) Whitten. She attended grammar school in E. Waterboro and was a graduate of the former Waterboro High School. She graduated summa cum laude from the Beverly (Mass.) Hospital School of Practical Nursing.For over 20 years she worked as a nurse in the nursery and obstetrical departments of the H. D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford, retiring in 1981.In 1983 she moved to Ft. Myers, FL where she was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Pine Island. She moved back to Sanford in 1995. She had been a member of St. Stephen the Martyr Episcopal Church in Waterboro.She was predeceased by her first husband Samuel M. Munroe in 1950, by her second husband, Alton S. Benson in 1991, and by 2 sons, Robert M. Munroe in 1963 and Richard A. Munroe in 1987.Survivors include a son, David A. Munroe of Limington, a stepson Robert A. Benson of Saco, 2 stepdaughters, Betty J. Cote of Jackman, Shirley Gilbert of Dryden, a brother, Thomas A. Whitten of Sanford, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.A committal service will be held at the convenience of the family in Pine Grove Cemetery in So.
