Shirley M. Benoit, 76, a lifelong resident of Sanford passed away following a long battle with cancer on Sunday October 12, 2014 at the Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford. She was born in Sanford on November 10, 1937 a daughter of the late Albert and Irene (Allaire) Hupe. She graduated from St. Ignatius High School.For many years she was employed at W.T. Grants. When she retired in 2012 she had been employed as an Advertising Representative for the Journal Tribune with 34 years of service. She loved and had been volunteering at the Mainers for the past 12 years. She was also very active and involved in raising funds for local outreach programs and charities.A lifelong communicant of the parish she was a former member of the St. Ignatius Choir.She enjoyed reading, her plants and her travels to Florida. What brought her the greatest joy was babysitting her twin great grandchildren, Tatum and Lilah.Shirley is predeceased by her husband, Paul J. Benoit who passed away in 2006.She is survived by her children, Dennis Benoit and his wife, Mona of Lebanon, Deborah F. Pelletier of Sanford, grandchildren, Crystal Benoit, Derek Benoit, Tatiana Murphy and her husband, Eddie, twin great grandchildren, Tatum and Lilah, siblings, Lorraine Rodrigue and her husband, Donald of Shapleigh, Richard Hupe and his wife, Ruth of North Berwick, Maurice Hupe and his partner, Gloria of Shapleigh, Sandra Bicknell of Shapleigh, Nancy Townsend of Acton, Michael Hupe and his partner, Anita of Arundel.Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church. Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider donations in her memory to the Sanford Cancer Center, 27 Industrial Avenue, Sanford, ME 04073.
