Frederick W. Titus

Frederick W. Titus, 90, of Springvale, ME passed away peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2016 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Fred, son of Frederick and Adelaide (Foulis) Titus, was born in Union City, PA. He attended school in Weymouth, MA.At the outbreak of WW II Fred enlisted in the U.S Navy where he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex (CV-9) in the Pacific theater. The Essex was credited with 68 operations earning multiple medals and citations. The Essex withstood multiple typhoons and a direct hit from a Kamikaze pilot. The Essex played a major role in the fall of Okinawa and missions against Iwo Jima.At the end of the war Fred came home to Springvale to join his father and relatives. Fred later joined the Sanford Fire Department where he served with great pride, retiring as Division Commander. Fred was also a founding member of the Sanford Fire Department union. Fred, lovingly known as "Billy" to family and friends, is survived by his nephews David McGlynn of Wilbraham, MA, Mark McGlynn of Oak Bluffs, MA, his niece Mary Williams of West Springfield, MA. and other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews in various parts of the country. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Mary Driscoll and her husband George of Springvale, dear friends Jason, Ronni, Logan, and Camryn Champlin who for the last year brought Fred into their lives as one of their own, a relationship that started 20 years ago in the local Dunkin Donuts, where Fred was "just being Fred." As all the ladies from City Hall know, he was that one person that you hated to love. And just so you all know, Sherry was his favorite. Jessie Krall and her husband Michael, served not only as his legal representative but as a family friend. The dedication to protecting Fred was only overshadowed by their caring and compassionate ways. A friendship even Fred knew that "she" was the boss. Fred was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Edna (Green) in 1997, his sisters Marilyn McGlynn, Eleanor Fahey, Nellie Dolan and his beloved dog Mr. Ed. Additionally, Fred was an honorary member of the Massabesic Girls Lacrosse team where he stood by their side at all but one game. The gift you gave him was immeasurable as he cared deeply for each and every one of you. To that, his words will forever be remembered, "The only one that can beat you, is you." Many thanks to Dr. Daniel and Susan Krell, a truly unselfish couple who stepped into Fred's life by caring for his beloved Mr. Ed. They gave Mr. Ed the life he deserved, just as Fred wanted. Your tireless efforts and compassion for both Mr. Ed and Fred will never be forgotten, nor will the Chicago Dogs. Family and Friends would also like to thank the Veteran's Home in Scarborough and all their dedicated staff. Carolyn, Galore, and Donna, just to name a few, gave Fred the utmost of care and attention. Your level of care and humility was always above and beyond and thank you will never be enough. You truly are a credit to your profession.
