David Alan Spear, 67, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at his home inSanford.He was born on August 8, 1951 to Charles and Gladys (Greenlaw) Spear in Eastport Mainewhere he grew up and attended local schools, graduating from Shead Memorial High School.He then enlisted in the US Air Force where he served for four years. He served during theVietnam War in Thailand as a security policeman in the 509th Bomb Wing attaining the rank ofstaff sergeant .During his working life, he was employed by the Wells Police Department for two years, and a short time at the Sanford Post Office. Most of his career was spent as a pipefitter and then a supervisor at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 40 years and retired from there. He was also on the Sanford Fire Call Department for 25 years, as well as a past commander of the American Legion Post 19 in Sanford, and a member of the Sanford Elks Club where he was Elk of the Year in 1991.David had been attending Crossroads Methodist Church in Sanford.In his earlier years, he liked to fish and hunt, but he always loved to play golf. David was alwaysknown to be doing word searches and watching the news. He was also a Red Sox fan andenjoyed traveling.Having a great big heart, David loved family, and children, and he showed this by volunteering and donating to causes to help children and animals. He also adored his umbrella cockatoo Marlow.David was predeceased by his parents, and his step-father, Gordon Carter.Survivors include his wife of forty one years, Mary (Hambelton) Spear, two brothers, WayneSpear and his wife Francis, of Machias or Township 14, Robert Spear and his significant otherKelly Brickett, of Charleston, a sister, Phyllis Gagnon and her husband Ronald, of Sanford, threenephews, Shaun, Alex and Ben Gagnon, great niece and nephews Olivia, Emma and Jack,several other nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved, and his beloved uncle CalvinGreenlaw, who was a father figure and great influence in his life.Friends and relatives are invited to a time of visitation on Friday, December 14, from 2:00 P.M.to 4:00 P.M. with a funeral service at 4:00 P.M. at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. A burial with military honors will be held at Southern Maine Veterans MemorialCemetery in the spring.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider, the Animal Welfare Society, P.O.
