Robert Smith
Robert E. Smith, 94, of Springvale, died on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Robert was born in Sanford on June 10, 1916 to Robert and Lizzie (Boothby) Smith and attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School. Following high school he served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After leaving the service, he was employed by H.A. Mapes for several years. In 1946 he married Avis Dorrell and they spent the next 55 years together until her death in 2001. Robert eventually left H.A. Mapes and went into partnership with a friend, purchasing Stanley Hardware in Springvale which they owned and operated together until their retirement.Robert was a member of the Masons, belonging to the Preble Lodge in Sanford. He was a member of the Scottish Rites in the Valley of Portland and a Shriner from the Kora Temple in Lewiston. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Springvale. Robert was very active in the clubs that he belonged to and was also an avid reader. After he retired he built several clocks which he gave to different members of his family. He also enjoyed working around his house and spending summers at Square Pond. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.Surviving are his son, Leslie Smith and his wife Janice of Acton; two granddaughters, Stacey Beamis and her husband Sean of North Berwick and Lorey Hebert of Phoenix, AZ; and four great grandchildren, Cameron and Connor Beamis of North Berwick, Emma and Nicholas Hebert of Phoenix, AZ.A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 14th at the Oakdale Cemetery, located on Twombley Road in Sanford. Arrangements are under the direction of Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home in Springvale.The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. William F.
