Joan Smith

Joan Smith, 77, of Waterboro, died on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at Greenwood Center in Sanford.Joan was born in Oslo, Norway on April 11, 1930. She came to the United States at the age of 20 and married Arthur Smith in 1953. When she was young she made a living by making fur coats.Mrs. Smith was an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed square dancing and also going swimming in Middle Branch Pond. She was skilled at making many different craft items, which she used to decorate her home. She will be remembered as a very independent and strong willed person and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.Joan was predeceased by her husband, Arthur R. Smith.Surviving are a niece, Sherry Mariner and her husband Gary of Lyman; a nephew, Paul Kontos and his wife Cheryl of Limerick; two great nieces, Mary Linsey of Lyman and Stephanie Kontos of Limerick; a cousin Knut Asper and his wife Marianne of MA and several other nieces and nephews.A period of visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 15th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 17th at Pine Grove South Cemetery in South Waterboro.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the Greenwood Center Activities Fund, 1142 Main Street, Sanford, Maine 04073.To leave a message of condolence for the family, please click on the condolences tab to the left.
