William Smith,90, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the Hillcrest Gardens in Sanford. He was born in Sanford on December 23, 1916, a son of Edgar Samuel Smith and Margaret Monaghan Smith.He attended Sanford High School, where he was prominent in basketball and baseball.He was inducted into the Army on March 7, 1941 and served his country during WWII with Company L 169th Div. of 43rd Infantry Div. under General Wing. He was wounded at the battle of Munda in the Pacific (Luzon) where he received a purple heart and served in other areas of the Pacific.He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Sanford. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Sanford Mainers Baseball teams. He refereed games at Sanford High School and the former Nasson College. He was also an avid player and fan of golf. When he was a young man he had worked at the Sanford Country Club.He was well known in and around Sanford Square, where he was known for his whistling and playing of the harmonica. He is known by his nickname 'Smitty'.He was previously employed as a weaver in the Sanford Mills. He retired from Wasco products Inc.He is predeceased by his brothers and sister, James Smith, Ann Mary (Smith) Jowett, Harold Smith.He is survived by three nieces, Mary Ann (Jowett) Randall and her husband, Robert of Springvale, Marion (Smith) Hogan of Swampscott,MA, Irene (Smith) Diment and her husband, Joseph of Kittery Point, Douglas Jowett and his wife, Susan of Brunswick, sister in law, Marie Smith of Kittery Point, and several grand nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be on Friday February 16th from 6-8pm at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 1pm at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, St. Ignatius Church in Sanford.
