Edgar G. Roy, 90, of Sanford, passed away on Friday February 22, 2008 after a period of declining health at the Newton Center in Sanford. Born on July 2, 1917 in Compton, P.Q., Canada. He was a son of the late Edmond and Desneige (Bisson) Roy. He attended the former Holy Family School. A lifelong parishioner and communicant of Holy Family. He served the parish as an altar server usher.Mr. Roy proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member and Past Commander as well as Chaplain of the Sanford American Legion Post #19. He was also a member of the D.A.V. and served as Chaplain. He was a Past President and the oldest continous member of the Sanford Lafayette Club. For many years he had been employed at Sanford Shoe. After retirement he continued working as a janitor at the Newton Center and the school cafeteria in various capacities. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their camp on Sand Pond that he built with the help of his family. He also enjoyed travelling with his wife, Anita. They took many trips with the 4th Ivy Infantry Division, the highlight of these trips was visiting Normandy on the 25th anniversary of the invasion. Most recently he had been picked to receive the 'Remeber Me Lifetime Achievement Award', by the Maine MHCA this coming April at the State House in Augusta.Mr. Roy is predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Anita (Gosselin) Roy who passed away in 2006. He is also predeceased by a grandson, Daniel Tranchemontagne, his three brothers, Joseph Roy, Laurier Roy, Philip Roy, and a sister, Antoinette Legere.He is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Tranchemontagne and her husband, George of Sanford, and a, Roger Roy and his wife, Suzi of Clearwater, Fl, 7 grandsons, 1 step granddaughter, 11 great grandchildren, two brothers, Emile Roy of Sanford and Real Roy and his wife, Lucienne of Sanford as well as many nieces and nephew.Visiting hours for Mr. Roy will be on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street in Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 9 :30 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux-Holy Family Church in Sanford. Burial with military honors will be in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Newton Center Activity Fund 35 July Street, Sanford ME 04073, or to the D.A.V. P.O.
