Wilma Libby Whitehouse Rodgers
Wilma Libby Whitehouse Rodgers, 104, longtime resident of Sanford, died March 20, 2007. She was born August 16, 1902, in Milton, NH, eldest child of Willard F. and Elsie (Peterson) Libby and attended one-room schools from kindergarten through high school.Wilma's first job after high school graduation was teaching school in West Newfield for one year. She worked for 13 years as director of payroll for the Universal Shoe Corporation in Springvale, followed by 26 years for the Sanford Institution for Savings in Sanford. She held the position of Assistant Treasurer for 18 years and retired from the bank at the age of 67. She was president of the Maine Association of Savings Bank Women and Past Matron and Past District Deputy of the Clover Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She attended the First Baptist Church in Springvale since the early 1920's. Wilma was most proud of her research and book titled: Genealogy of the Libby Family, vol. 2, Books 1 & 2, covering the years 1882-1992. This labor of love took 25 years to research and write.Wilma and Christopher Columbus Whitehouse, her first husband, were married September 23, 1921, and shared 39 years of marriage until his death February 20, 1960. Harold M. Rodgers, her second husband, predeceased her in 1985. Also, she is predeceased by three siblings, Ruth Clough of Kennebunkport, Lewis Libby of Lebanon, Delmont Libby of Lebanon, and her 5 step children, Marion Roberts, Ira Whitehouse, Robert Whitehouse, Wesley Whitehouse and Christine Hall. She is survived by Ernest L. Whitehouse, her son, of New Hartford, NY, and his family, Christopher C. A. Whitehouse of Greeneville, TN, Deborah K. L. W. Dunham of Hickory, NC, Sarah C. W. Carrington of Westminster, CO, and Stephen Boucher of Wells, great granddaughters Libby Whitehouse and Clara Rutledge, as well as great grandsons David Whitehouse (soon-to-be-born) and Brandon Boucher.Special love and thanks to her nephew Lewis Clough and his wife Erlene and to granddaughter Betty Yates for all their help, care and concern during her stay in the nursing home and hospital stays. Also to Thomas and Virginia Whitten, her neighbors, for help and love over the years.A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 26 at 11:00 AM, at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street Springvale, with the Rev. Elizabeth A. Keating officiating. Calling hours will be Sunday March 25 from 5 - 7 PM and on Monday from 10 - 11 AM.
