Leon P. Provencher
Leon P. Provencher, 89, of Sanford, died on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the Newton Center in Sanford.Leon was born on January 7, 1927 to Henri and Anna (Cartier) Provencher in Sanford where he grew up and attended the local Catholic schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1958 he married Christine Deschenes and together they raised two children and shared 54 years of marriage until her death in 2013. Leon was employed for many years at Sprague Electric before his retirement in 1989.Leon had been a communicant of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church in Springvale and a member of the Springvale Knights of Columbus where he was a past Grand Knight. He was a very patriotic man and had been a life member of the V.F.W., the American Legion and the AMVETS. Leon enjoyed going dancing and traveling with his wife to Canada, vegetable gardening and woodworking. He would often make bird houses and wood crafts which he would donate to be sold at the church fairs. He loved listening to music and was a very handy person, capable of building or fixing virtually anything that he put his mind to. He was a loving and devoted husband, father grandfather and great grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.Leon was predeceased by his wife Christine and by nine siblings.Surviving are two children, Robert Provencher and his wife Sandy of Sanford and Denise (Provencher) Bass of Springvale; four grandchildren, Beau Gaudreau of Old Orchard Beach, Kristie Simanic and her husband Milan of Windham, Jessica Sladen of Springvale and David Provencher of North Berwick; one great-grandson, Benjamin Gaudreau of Old Orchard Beach; three siblings, George Provencher of Florida, Laurette Boisvert of Springvale and Alice Guay of Sanford and many nieces and nephews.Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 on Tuesday, December 6th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale.
