Donat A. Provencher
Donat A. Provencher, 93, of Sanford, and formerly of South Portland, passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. He was born in Sanford on April 10, 1916, a son of Henri and Anna (Cartier) Provencher. He attended St. Ignatius and Holy Family schools.He served in the Marine Corps during WWII. and Korea. On April 18, 1936 he married the former Simone Bouffard. He had formerly owned and operated a Barber and Beauty Shop in South Portland. For many years he had been employed as an oil burner technician. He retired from the Correctional Center in South Windham where he had been employed as a chief engineer. After retirement he moved back to Sanford. He was a parishioner of Notre Dame and then St. Ignatius Church. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Rev. W. Robert Batchelder General Assembly, Knights of Columbus, the Sanford Elk's Lodge and the D.A.V.He is predeceased by two sisters, Irene Bergeron and Rita Roussin, three brothers, Emile Provencher, Andre Provencher and Lucien Provencher. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Simone (Bouffard) Provencher of Sanford, one son, Roger D. Provencher and his wife, Janet of Wells, two daughters, Huguette P. Hodgdon and her husband, Carroll of Sanford and Georgette A. Zuniga and her husband, Romeo of Sanford, four brothers, Alphe Provencher of Washington, DC, Leon Provencher of Springvale, Lionel Provencher of Sanford, George Provencher of Florida, three sisters, Laurette Boisvert of Springvale, Alice Guay of Sanford and Denise Pelletier of York as well as 13 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 29 from 2 :00 to 4 :00 and 6 :00 to 8 :00 PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 :00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, St. Ignatius Church in Sanford. Burial with military honors will take place on Wednesday at 1 :00 PM at the New Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.Arrangements are under the direction of the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.To leave the family a message of condolence please use the "condolences" tab to the left.
