William L. Powell, 70, of Springvale, died on Sunday, June 21 at his home after a long illness. Bill was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on May, 25 1945, the son of Ivor and Isabelle (Glover) Powell. He grew up in Hoopeston, Illinois and attended local schools there. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy where he served as a corpsman and was stationed in Japan during the Vietnam War and working as a surgical technician there.Bill married April Bourque in 1974 and together raised two daughters. They lived several years in Illinois and then relocated to Springvale where he worked as a registered nurse at Newton Center in Sanford. Bill was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He was very proud to show his extensive display of team memorabilia.Survivors include his wife of 41 years, April Powell of Springvale, two daughters, Theresa Pelletier and her husband Normand of Springvale, Denise Longfellow and her husband Lucas of Benton, Illinois, and five grandsons, Seth Powell, Matthew Coppola, Shane Pelletier, Alexander Longfellow and Bradley Longfellow, three sisters, Margaret Shine, Yvonne Green, Virginia Powell, two brothers, Ivor Powell, and Jerry Powell, all of Illinois.A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 25 at 12:00 noon at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral home, 580 Main St., Springvale where friends and relatives may call one hour prior to the service. Interment with military honors will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
