Marjorie S. Olson, 94, of Sanford died on Monday, January 25, 2010 at the Newton Center in Sanford.Marjorie was born on May 25, 1915 in New Haven, CT to John and Elizabeth (Baldwin) Seaton. She grew up in Torrington, CT where she attended local schools, graduating Torrington High School and Bay Path College. As a teenager she built her own ham radio and studied to become a licensed operator. She passed her radio operator test and became the first licensed female ham radio operator in the state of Connecticut. Marjorie held several jobs throughout her life including working as a secretary for the Hartford Teachers Retirement Board, the Hartford Insurance Company, E.J. Kelly Trucking Company and the Torrington Company where she worked until she retired in 1965. In 1937 while working in Springfield, MA, Marjorie was able to see the Hindenburg Dirigible float overhead only 3 1/2 hours before it exploded as it was landing in Lakehurst, NJ. After her retirement she relocated to Maine where she would reside for the rest of her life. She enjoyed doing needlework, rug hooking, knitting, spending time outside and gardening. Marjorie also enjoyed swimming. Over a five-year period during her eighties, she logged over 2,300 miles swimming in the pool at the YMCA. Marjorie always liked going to the beach and especially enjoyed going to Goose Rocks Beach. Marjorie had been a member of North Parish Congregational Church in Sanford. During the later part of her life Marjorie developed Alzheimer's, which she would deal with for over eight years. Throughout her illness she remained very high functioning, able to read, do word puzzles and still recognize her family and friends. Marjorie will be remembered for her wonderful laugh, her great sense of humor and her deep love for her family and will be dearly missed. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Andrew Olson and a brother, John SeatonSurviving are two sons, John Crystal and his wife Kathy of Sanford and Don C. Crystal and his wife Nancy of Farmington, NH; six grandchildren, Cory Crystal and his companion Patti Davis, Sandy Richer and her husband Danny, Michelle Crystal and her companion Nick Costa, Dawn Crystal Brown, Heather Gregoire and her husband Gary and Brent Crystal and his wife Naomi; ten great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.At Marjorie's request there will be no funeral services. A private family gathering will be held in the future.
