Robert "Bob" M. Assarian, 85, of Sanford, ME, formerly Arlington, MA, his home for over 60 years, and Watertown, MA, died at his home on Saturday, April 14, 2018."Kazar" as he was known by his closest associates, was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 6, 1932 to Vahan and Nazely (Sarkisian) Assarian. He attended Arlington High School where he played football, track, and baseball. After graduating in 1952, he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict serving his country from 1952 - 1956. During his active duty, he was stationed in Greenland as a radar operator tracking Russian planes. Following his honorable discharge, he worked as a bartender, milk delivery man, and runner at Raytheon Corporation in Waltham, where he met his wife of 60 years. After marrying in 1958, he enrolled in the former Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in the Back Bay and received his Bachelors of Science in Accounting from Bentley College in 1964. Bob was employed as a federal auditor with the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) for the Department of Defense working out of Lincoln Lab, Draper Lab, the O'Neill Building, MIT and various colleges and universities for 31 years until his retirement in 1993.He was a lifetime member and longtime bartender at the American Legion, Post 39, in Arlington, and member of the Sanford Elks and Sanford Country Club when he moved in 2007. Bob loved golfing, road trips - especially to Florida, Notre Dame football, most sports, history, documentaries, philosophy, gin martinis, and the simple pleasure of just being outdoors whether on the golf course, at the ocean, or just sitting in the garage listening to music.Bob was the loving husband of Doris Assarian (Pinell); dear old Dad to Greg Assarian and his wife, Kelley; Rob Assarian and his partner Noreen Doherty; Nicole Palmer and her husband, Neal; proud Papa to Samantha Kane and her husband, Jordan; and Ashley Assarian. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Vahan and Nazely Assarian (Sarkisian); loving sister, Margaret Anderson; and many dear friends and family.Friends and family are welcome to visiting hours at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street Springvale, ME 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, April 22nd. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, April 23rd at St. James Armenian Church, 465 Mount Auburn Street in Watertown. Interment with military honors will be at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford, ME.The Assarian family is beyond grateful for the benefits and services provided by the Veterans Administration in Maine, Homecare for Maine, and Wentworth Hospice Services and expresses a heartfelt thank you to Bob's very special caregivers.
