Raul "Mike" Micheliche Sr., of Sanford, ME, died Monday, July 9, 2007 at the age of 72.Raul was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 19, 1935 to Felix and Theresa Maria Torres Micheliche. At the age of seventeen Raul enlisted in the United States Navy, and proudly made a career of serving his country for the next twenty years. After retiring he spent the next ten years in the Fleet Reserve.Raul spent time in the Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp. He also was stationed at VAW 33 out of Brunswick, ME. During his tour of duty Raul was also stationed at Barin Field in Foley, AL, Chase Field Naval Air Station in Beeville, TX, and the last ten years at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Raul retired at the age of 37, but continued to work elsewhere until his retirement in December of 2003.While in Rhode Island he was involved in the Boy Scouts, and as Scout Master led an inner city group. He was also instrumental in turning around the lives of two young boys that had been heading for trouble. Their mothers came to his home to give an update on their progress. During his time as Scout Master he led a group of 16 young scouts on a trip to the Grand Canyon. They made several stops including Ogden, and Salt Lake City Utah, rafting down the Colorado and Yaupa Rivers, and mule back riding to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Then they hade to hike back up on the return to the top.It was after his retirement from the Navy that Raul and his family moved to Maine. While living in Maine, Raul became active with the N.R.A. and taught gun safety courses as well as hunter safety courses. He was a member of both the Sanford & Springvale Fish and Game, and North Berwick Fish and Game clubs. He, along with his friend Dan Twombley went on the first moose hunt held in Maine.Over the years Raul had several battles with cancer, since 1984. In 2006 he was once again diagnosed with cancer, but was unable to beat the disease that he so courageously battled for so long. Raul will surely be missed by his many friends and loved ones.He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Charlotte Scott Micheliche of Sanford, a son Raul "Mitch" Micheliche Jr. of Shapleigh; two daughters, Maria Micheliche of Acton, Suzette Richer of Shapleigh, and seven grandchildren, Jamie Micheliche and friend Amanda Kimball, Jessica D'Alessandro and husband Chris, Theresa Hersey and friend Brad Bowen, Rene' Richer and friend Stephen Mitchell, Sara Richer and friend Peter Wentworth all of Sanford, John Micheliche of Jacksonville, FL, and Kathleen and husband Terry of MO; six great grandchildren, Shania Hersey, Jorden D'Alessandro, Cameron Kimball, Hunter Mitchell all of Sanford, plus Tyler and Ariel Aronbruster of MO. He also leaves behind a brother Henry Felix Micheliche and his wife Norma of Maryland, and several nieces and nephews across the country.An 11:00 AM memorial service for Raul will be held on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, ME.
