Horace W. Merrill, 70 years old, of Sanford, ME died Sunday, May 27, 2007 in Portland, ME. Horace was born in Kingfield, ME on March 13, 1937. He was the son of the late Merle Merrill and Esther and Camile Bubier Gagnon. For many years Horace worked for the Great Falls Bleachery as a truck driver until his retirement in 1995. Horace was a very active man. He often volunteered his time to community projects such as the clean up of number one pond, parade events, and assisting at the Share Program food pantry. He was known by many in the community as "Peppere", or the "Candyman", because he often gave candy out to the children in the community. When Horace wasn't helping others, one could find him spending time outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and taking nice long walks, visiting friends along the way. He enjoyed playing the guitar, going to races, and especially spoiling his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceasing Horace was his wife of fifty years Claudette Guillemette Merrill. Surviving are his children Diane Dugre, Paul and Debbie Alexander, David Merrill, Merle Merrill, Michael Merrill, Robert Merrill, Michelle Merrill, and many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters; Lillian Merrill, Mabel Heath, Eva Pinkham, and four brothers, Frank, Clyde, Carl, and Clarence Merrill. A period of visitation for Horace will be held this Thursday, May 31, 2007 from 6 to 8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale, ME. An 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Church, St. Therese Parish of Sanford on Friday, June 1, 2007.
