Bernadette R. "Bernie" McKay, 62, of Sanford, loving mother and wife, died peacefully at home with her husband by her side on December 30, after a long battle with lung disease.She was born in Providence, RI on September 27, 1947, a daughter of Floyd and Florence (Souza) Cowart and attended schools in Provincetown and Gloucester, Mass.Bernie was employed with manufacturing facilities in Gloucester, MA and Seabrook, NH and with Health Tex Clothing in Portland. More recently, she worked as the manager of Slender-You in the Midtown Mall in Sanford.She was a communicant of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish in Sanford.Bernie was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Sanford. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing and crafting.Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Michael D. McKay of Sanford, son Richard Irvin of Seabrook, NH, son Derrick Irvin of Florida, daughter Shawna Ducharme of Sanford, her twin sister Marieannette Zanis and her husband Stanley of Sanford, sister Valerie McGillivray of Haverhill, MA, brother Robert McGillivray of Salisbury, MA, brother Christopher McGillivray and his wife Janie of Arizona, brother Chester Plaiss and his wife Dorothy of Ohio, sister Cynthia Eaton of Amesbury, MA, stepdaughter Dawn Engleman and her husband Jeff of St. Louis, MO, stepdaughter Holly Moore and her husband Chuck of Emerald Isle, NC, stepson Michael D. McKay, II and his wife Karen of Clarksville, TN, stepdaughter Katie McKay of Mobile, AL, 10 grandchildren, a great grandchild and her beloved little Chihuahua, Magnolia.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Church of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, 66 North Avenue, Sanford. Burial will be in the spring in Oakdale Cemetery, Sanford.Condolences may be expressed at the tab at left.
