Gerald "Mac" McCoy, Sr., 87, of Waterboro/Lyman, died at his home on Saturday, March 16th surrounded by his family.Mac was born in Hay Springs, Nebraska on August 22, 1925 to Orville and Helen (Elston) McCoy. His family moved several times when he was young before finally settling in Hermiston, Oregon where he grew up and attended local schools. Mac proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After completing his term in the military he returned to Oregon to become a cowboy. He was employed on a dairy farm where he broke horses and went on to work for three years helping to construct the McNary Dam. In 1946 he married Ruby Scott. Mac and Ruby relocated to Maine in 1956. Together they raised six children and shared 45 years of marriage until her death in 1991. Mac was employed as a truck driver for Genest Concrete in Sanford for 25 years and then went to work for McCoy Trucking where he stayed for over 30 years until he retired. He also worked for 10 years as a campground host with his companion Evelyn. Mac was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed playing solitaire, horseshoes and spending time with his family. He especially liked attending family gatherings and events. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.Mac was predeceased by his wife, Ruby McCoy; two grandsons, Richy and Chuck Smith and by a brother, Ben McCoy.Surviving are his companion of 20 years, Evelyn Wakefield of Lyman; six children, Sammuel McCoy of Waterboro, Sandra Smith and her husband Stephen of Bradenton, Florida, Duane McCoy and his wife Rosemary of Waterboro, Jerry McCoy and his wife Denise of Tampa, Florida, Gerald "Buddy" McCoy, Jr. and his wife Sharlene Howe of North Waterboro and Dale McCoy and his wife Pauline of North Waterboro; five step-children, Diane Laverriere of Biddeford, Shirley Cole and her husband Don of Lyman, Leslie Wakefield of Biddeford, Catherine Wood and her husband Tim of Dayton and Dennis Wakefield and his wife Kathy of Lyman; a brother, Robert McCoy and his wife Pat of Burbank, Washington; two brothers-in-law, Frank Scott and his wife Dolly of Alfred and Jack Scott and his wife Carolyn of Alfred, 13 grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 24 step-great grandchildren.Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, March 20th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, March 21st at 10:00 AM. Interment with military honors will take place in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in South Waterboro.
