Elwyn W. Lowe
Elwyn W. Lowe, 88, of North Shapleigh died on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Newton Center in Sanford.Mr. Lowe was born in Shapleigh on May 25, 1922 to Ruben and Fannie (Abbott) Lowe and lived there his entire life with the exception of the time spent in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.He was educated in the one room schoolhouse at North Shapleigh through the eighth grade and at Lindsey High School in Shapleigh for three years, graduating from Sanford High School in 1941.Mr. Lowe enlisted in the Army Air Corps in November of 1942 and was assigned to the Alaskan Wing of the A.T.C. at Fairbanks, AK for two years where he serviced lend-lease aircraft heading to Russia. He was discharged November 28, 1945 and returned to North Shapleigh and was self-employed for many years as a carpenter.He enjoyed farming as well as raising cattle and hay. He also loved to hunt and fish and did this as long as he was able. He was a 59-year member and Past Master of Day Spring Masonic Lodge in West Newfield, a 70-year member of Mousam Lake Grange and a 32-year member of West Day Post No. 123, American Legion in Kezar Falls.Mr. Lowe was predeceased by his parents and by a sister, Mildred E. Lowe.Surviving are two cousins, Carolyn E. Tibbetts of Newington, CT and Charlotte E. Tibbetts of North Shapleigh.At. Mr. Lowe's request there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 13th at the Highland Grove Cemetery located in North Shapleigh. Arrangements are under the direction of Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home in Springvale.Mr. Lowe requested that there be no flowers and that memorial contributions be sent to the Newton Center Beano Fund, 20 July Street, Sanford, ME 04073.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
