Howard T. Littlefield, 93, of Springvale, died on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Howard was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on June 4, 1917 to Frank and Ruth (Thayer) Littlefield. While he was growing up his family moved to several different places in Maine and Massachusetts. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1934. Following high school, Howard went to work for the York Utilities Trolley Company in Sanford. He worked there throughout his life until retiring approximately ten years ago. He started out operating trolleys and eventually transitioned to driving the busses and assisted in running the office when the company no longer ran trolleys. Howard served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. On November 18, 1944 he married Minerva Hutchins and together they raised four children.Howard was an avid movie fan. He was a licensed projectionist and worked nights and weekends for a time at a theater in Portland. He especially enjoyed silent movies and had a large collection of silent movies and 78 albums. Howard also enjoyed photography and liked to try to capture objects and nature from interesting points of view. He was a rail enthusiast and enjoyed traveling by train. He and his wife traveled virtually every major rail line throughout the United States and Canada. Howard always drove interesting and economical vehicles. Over the years he owned a King Midget, a small three-wheeled electric car and a three-wheeled motorcycle. Family was always very important to Howard. He was a devoted husband and father and always put his family first. He was a kind and loving man and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Howard was predeceased by his brother Jack Littlefield.Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Minerva Hutchins Littlefield of Springvale; three sons, Bruce Littlefield and his wife Hazel of Brooks, ME; Jay Littlefield and his wife Bonnie of Monticello, Florida and Wayne Littlefield and his wife Marliss of Renton, Washington; a daughter, Ellen Doyle of Springvale; two sisters-in-law, Priscilla Hutchins Bucklin of Sanford and Louise Hutchins Lush and her husband Herbert of Anchorage, AK; ten grand children and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale.
