Richard C. "Dick" Libbey, Sr., 81, of Sanford, died October 18 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland after a long illness.He was born in Sanford on October 2, 1929, a son of Ernest and Stella (Goodwin) Libbey, attended Sanford schools and was a 1948 graduate of Sanford High School after which he served in the US Army.Upon his return from the military, he went to work for General Electric in Somersworth, NH where he was employed for 40 years, retiring in 1989.An outdoorsman, he loved to go camping, hunting and fishing. He loved to travel and he liked to scavenge with his metal detector. Talented with his hands, he was a creative woodworker and whittler.He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Libbey and by his only son Rick Libbey, Jr. earlier this year.Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Shirley (Brunette) Libbey, grandson Nate Libbey, granddaughter Nicki Libbey, daughter-in-law Fran Libbey, all of Sanford, and a brother Roger Libbey of Lebanon.Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale on Thursday from 6-8 PM. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
