Florence Lewis
Florence G. Lewis, 98, of Springvale, died on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.Florence was born in Sanford on March 27, 1915 to John and Annie (Riley) Lister. She grew up in Springvale and attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1934. Following high school she attended the Providence Bible Institute in Providence, Rhode Island. While working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1942 she met David Lewis who was stationed there while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. They were married in 1943 and together they raised five children and shared 69 years of marriage. After she was married Florence left her job at the shipyard and devoted her life to raising and caring for her family.Florence was cradle rolled at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church where she was a lifelong active member. She was dedicated to her church and gave freely of her time and talents including being involved in the Gleaners, the choir, as a Sunday school teacher and on missionary boards. She loved to bake and took pleasure in sharing her goods with friends and family. Florence was a music lover and had played the piano for many years. When she got older she had also started learning to play the violin. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. She was especially proud of her flower gardens. She was also a talented seamstress, often making clothing for her children when they were young. Florence was an outgoing woman with many friends. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Florence was predeceased by her husband David Lewis in 2012, two sons, Gordon C. Lewis and John W. Lewis and a brother, Edward Lister.Surviving are three children, Gloria Schwartz of Sanford, Marilyn Quartararo and her husband John of Alfred and Lisa McHugh of Brewer; a daughter-in-law, Judy Lewis of Reading, Pennsylvania; 15 grandchildren, John David Quartararo, Jennifer K. Quartararo, Stephanie N. Quartararo, Adam G. Lewis, Kelli Lewis, Warren Schwartz, David Schwartz, Paul Schwartz, Jack D. Schwartz, Tanya Turner, Angela Reed, Sierra Reed, Ashley Reed, Michael Reed and Josh McHugh and several great-grandchildren.Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, February 20th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 21st at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church located on Pleasant Street in Springvale.
