Mary Titcomb Knight

PORTLAND - Mary Titcomb Knight, 87, of Falmouth, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the Maine Medical Center.Born in Portland, Maine on March 25, 1921, she was the daughter of Edward S. and Margaret Hewey Titcomb. Mary was educated in Sanford, Maine schools, was in the graduating class of 1939 at Sanford High School, and was awarded the Tribune Cup for character and achievement. She attended Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1944.In World War II Mary trained as a Navy WAVE officer at Smith College and was stationed in Washington D.C. in the Office of Naval Operations. She was discharged as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade. After the war she worked in the Development Office of Mount Holyoke College. On November 4, 1950 she married her brother James' Bowdoin College fraternity brother, fellow naval officer and later law partner, Lendall B. Knight. They lived in Hartford, Connecticut, where their first two sons were born, and later lived in Bangor and Hampden, Maine, where their third son was born. In Bangor, Mary was active in the All Souls Congregational Church, the Shakespeare Club and was a Cub Scout Leader.The Knights moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1962, where Mary was a secretary in the middle school. She later became active in the First Congregational Church in South Portland and served as a Deaconess. Upon her retirement from the Cape Elizabeth school system, the couple moved to Springvale, where they lived for 26 years. Mary was a life-long member of the North Parish Congregational Church in Sanford.Mary enjoyed golf, tennis and sailing and had her own sailboat in her earlier years. She was a counselor at Camp Laughing Loon at Ossipee Lake where she taught many campers how to swim and sail. She also owned her own yarn shop and loved to knit. She was a talented stencilist and painter as well. Family and friends were often the appreciative recipients of her knitting and artistic gifts, warm hospitality, and fine cooking, especially during the holidays. When asked in a Walnut Hill School alumnae questionnaire what her "best accomplishment" was, Mary proudly responded, "Raising my three sons." She felt most fortunate at having a loving family and many friends.Lendall and Mary celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary seven years ago, which was attended by nearly 100 guests, including her bridesmaids. A recent Titcomb/Cole family reunion was also very meaningful for Mary. She was proud of her seagoing heritage, as a descendant of the Titcomb shipbuilders in Kennebunk. Mary's family is especially grateful that she could attend the wedding of her first grandchild, Margaret (Meg) Ruth Knight on August 16, 2008, in Cumberland.Mary is survived by her husband, Lendall B. Knight of Falmouth; son, Barton T. Knight and wife, Stephanie, of Cumberland; son, Daniel S. Knight and wife, Beda, of North Yarmouth; son, Capt. Lendall S. Knight, USN (Ret.) and wife, Christina, of Hampden; grandchildren, Margaret R. Knight and husband, Bryan Moravec of Tucson, Arizona; Samuel and William Knight, both of Cumberland, Lana, Fredrick, Andrew, and Luciana Knight of Hampden; cousin, Allan S. Titcomb and his wife, Dede of LeCanto, Florida; sister-in-law, Nancy D. Titcomb of Springvale; brother-in-law Lloyd Knight and his wife, Ellen of Cape Elizabeth; niece Marcy Kudirka and husband, Paul of Wayland, Massachusetts; and nephews Edward J. Titcomb of Springvale and William Titcomb of Washington, D.C.A funeral service will be held at the North Parish Congregational Church, 893 Main Street, Sanford on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 1pm.
