Evelyn E. Houston, 94, of Shapleigh, died on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Evelyn was born on January 28, 1912 in Gorham, ME to Arthur and Ella Davis Sceggell, she attended local schools. During WWII, Evelyn was employed in the spinning room at the Goodall Textile Mills in Sanford. Later in life, when her husband became ill, she went to work at General Electric in Limerick. The majority of Mrs. Houston's life was devoted to taking care of her family. She was a very loving and caring wife and mother and took great pride in maintaining an immaculate house for her family to live in. She had a reputation for being a wonderful cook; people were particularly fond of the wonderful pastries and doughnuts that she would make. Making ceramics was a favorite pastime of Evelyn's. She ran a ceramic shop for a few years where she sold her pieces and taught classes in ceramic making. She was a sales representative for Avon for approximately 25 years. She enjoyed doing this because it brought her into contact with many different people. She was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Houston will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Houston and by her oldest daughter Jeanette.Surviving are four children, Bruce Houston and his wife Lois and Barry Houston and his wife Deborah, all from Shapleigh, Ernest Houston and his wife Diane of Phoenix, Arizona and Betty-Jean Houston of Newfield; a brother, Earl Reed of Newfield; 23 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.A period of visitation will be held at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale on Sunday, October 8th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 9th at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place following the service at Highland Grove Cemetery in Shapleigh. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
