Bessie C. Horn

October 8, 2016
Bessie Clara Horn, 93, died on October 8, 2016 at her home in Acton. She was born on October 3, 1923 to Elmer and Ellen (Walsh) Goodwin in Mansfield, MA where she grew up and attended local schools. She attended Burdett Secretarial School in Boston and then worked at Dupont, also in Boston, prior to her marriage. Bessie was happiest when she stayed summers with her Aunt Ellen O'Brien in Acton. While out walking she met Victor Horn and in 1946 they married at the Acton Corner Church, which was the first marriage, performed there. Together they had two daughters. She worked at the USDA- York County ASCS until she retired after 27 1/2 years of service. She loved gatherings of family and friends, often having thirty people at the table for holiday meals. She especially loved her grandson and his tight group of friends that hung out at her house. She missed the boys terribly when they grew up and went out to start their adult lives.Camping was something she loved to do and was thankful to be able to see new places. As long as there was a full tank of gas she would willingly try any road to see where it would lead. She also loved crossword puzzles, soduko, cryptoquips, and jigsaw puzzles. Her favorite view was out her kitchen window to see Mt. Washington and Great East Lake.Patient, tolerant and never had a negative thing to say about anyone, Bessie welcomed any and all people to her home and table. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, brothers, Earl Goodwin, Chester Goodwin, Willis Goodwin and a sister Bertha Benoit.Survivors include daughters Barbara Horn and Nancy Whitman, a grandson Shane Whitman and his wife Shivohn, a sister in law, Louise Horn, and several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at the Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Road in Acton followed by a burial at Milton Mills Cemetery.
