Bertha A. (Gould) Hoffmann, 94, died on June 28, 2016 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. She was born on November 21, 1921 to Thomas and Bertha (Tenny) Gould in Braintree, Massachusetts where she grew up and attended local schools. She married Harry "Smokey" Hoffmann in 1945 and together they raised three children. Throughout the years they lived in Braintree and Carver, MA, Lakeland FL and finally settled in Winter Haven, FL. Bertha recently came to live with her daughter in Sanford, ME. Bertha was a great cook, and was especially good at baking pies and desserts. She was known to always have fresh cookies to share as a special thank you to others. As members of the South Congregational Church, she and Smokey were active members of the Merry Mates couples group in Braintree, MA. Bertha loved to watch and play golf. She also won several medals at Carefree Country Club in Winter Haven playing bocce ball. She enjoyed swimming, going to church and dining out with friends.She was a cancer survivor and lived many years cancer free.Bertha was a selfless person who never had a negative thing to say about anyone. She was liked and loved by all, and will be sadly missed. She always said "If you don't have something nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all."Survivors include a son, Robert Hoffmann and his wife Julie of Oakland, MD, a daughter Joanne Fawcett and her husband Bob of Sanford, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, a sister in law Marilyn Gould and a son in law, Harry Elliott of Needham, MA and several nieces and nephews.She is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 54 years, a daughter Marcia Elliott and a grandson Jason Fawcett, three brothers, Thomas Gould, Russell Gould, Lewis Gould, and three sisters, Miriam (Mim) Milk, Dorothy White, and Emily Birdsall. At the family's request there will be no services.
