Henry L' Heureux
Henry George L'Heureux, 83, devoted husband, Dad, Pepre, and a friend to many died July 4, 2008 at Goodall Hospital in Sanford following a courageous battle with mesothelioma.Henry was born January 19, 1925 in Lyman, Maine, the son of Albert and Blanche L'Heureux. Henry attended Sanford schools and lived most of his life in the Sanford-Springvale area. In April of 1943, Henry entered the US Army and served until honorably discharged in November of 1945. During World War II, Henry served in the Army, 3rd Infantry Division, Company H, 15th Infantry Regiment, 5th & 7th Army, in the European Theatre. He was involved in the invasions of Marseille, France, and the Anzio Beachhead in Italy. In addition these campaigns took him to Africa, and Germany.Henry was an outstanding athlete and after the war he returned to playing baseball. An outstanding catcher, he first played for the Goodall Sanford semi-pro team that at the time was one of the best teams in New England. When not playing for Goodall Sanford, Henry played for a variety of other teams, some as far away as Granby, Canada. Baseball remained a passion throughout his life. As a result of his outstanding catching ability, Henry will be inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in August, an honor of which he was very proud. Henry worked as a painting contractor for most of his life. At the time of his retirement he was employed by FA Gray in Portsmouth, N.H.His hobbies included sketching, building birdhouses, Bingo, music and singing Karaoke.Henry was a people person and his family and friends were the center of his life. His smile and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.Henry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Barbara (Ward) L'Heureux of Springvale, a son Daniel L'Heureux and wife Lynn of Palm Coast, Florida, a daughter Karol L'Heureux of Biddeford, and a grandson Peter L'Heureux and great grandson Isaha both of Lewiston. Henry is also survived by his brother Robert L'Heureux and wife Theresa, sister Lillian Cyr, sister Annette Vaccaro and husband Thomas, brother Normand L'Heureux and wife Shirley and sisters-in-law Theresa L'Heureux and Yvette L'Heureux. Henry was predeceased by his brothers Leo, Arthur, and Walter and Walter's wife Christina. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday July 8, 2008 at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church in Springvale. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.
