Winston McClure Harrison, 86, of Sanford, passed away on March 25, 2010. He was born in Sanford on June 28, 1923, the son of John W. and Clarissa (McFarland) Harrison. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1941. Upon graduation, he took his first job at Sanford Goodall Mills until his entrance into the military in 1943.He served his country during WWII in the Army Air Corps. He attended Radio school in England and became a Lead Radio Operator in the 8th Air Force Squadron. He flew 35 missions over Europe and Germany. He was awarded the Air Medal with Three Oak Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.After the war he returned to Sanford and started his first business selling Packard Automobiles. He also worked for Ballenger Auto in various capacities. When an opportunity presented itself to purchase Howlett's Gas & Variety Store, he did so. He expanded this business to include Sanford's first automated car wash, which recycled its water and was one of the first eco-friendly operations in Sanford. He operated this business until his retirement.He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was an avid golfer.Winston is predeceased by his first wife, Barbara (Mellor) Harrison, a second wife, Elinor (Bodwell) Harrison and one brother, Jack Harrison.Winston is survived by one sister, Melba (Harrison) Wallace of Orono, Maine, one sister-in-law, Carlene (Browne) Harrison of Sanford, one brother-in-law, Arthur Mellor of Cape Elizabeth, one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Robert (Pat) Andrews of Rye, NH, one son, Bruce W. Harrison of Sanford, six grandchildren, Kristin McClure Barrett of Denver, Colorado, Wendi Cain of Ansonia, CT, Scott Cain of Windsor, CT, Jess Donnelly of Sanford, Sean Henderson of Florida, Cynthia Henderson of Florida, one stepson, Douglas Henderson of Port Orange, Florida, one stepdaughter, Donna Cain of Orange, CT, 17 nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 10th at 10AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
