Michael D. Harmon, 71, of Sanford, died at his home on Wednesday, December 28, 2016.Michael was born in Buffalo, New York, on August 15, 1945, to Clair and Dorothy (Peet) Harmon. His father died when Michael was at an early age so his mother relocated to Bradford, Pennsylvania to be closer to family. He grew up with his extended family in Bradford where he attended local schools. Following graduation he attended Bowdoin College on a merit scholarship. While attending college he earned his Bachelor's Degree in English and was very active in the ROTC program. After graduation he was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army where he proudly served in Vietnam, the South China Sea and Chulai with the Americal Division.After completing his term in the military, Michael enrolled at the University of Pittsburg where he earned his Master's of Arts degree. When he finished school, he married Jeanne Rhinehart and together they raised a family in Maine. He also joined the U.S. Army Reserves and proudly served for many years before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with 28 combined years of military service. After earning his Master's Michael considered multiple job offers before accepting a position as a journalist with the Portland Press Herald, a position he held for 41 years until his retirement in 2011. In 2001 he married Margaret Harmon and was able to enjoy 15 wonderful years with his newly expanded family. In 2003 he was ordained as a Deacon in the Charismatic Episcopal Church and earned a second Master's Degree in Christian Ministry. In 2016 he was able to fulfill a life-long dream of Christian ministry when he was ordained as a priest in the church. Michael leaves behind his family, many friends and associates, and a legacy of caring and compassionate Christian service. He was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.Michael was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Gwenn Hannon.Surviving are his wife, Margaret Harmon of Sanford; his children, Dacy MacEachen and her husband Ian of Poland, Maine; Amber Rhinehart and her husband Johannes Schwerk of Dhaka, Bangladesh; Karl Harmon and his wife Calli of Whitefield, Maine; and Katrina Veilleux and her husband Christopher of Enfield, Connecticut; his beloved grandchildren, Moira, Cailean, Deleayni, Olivia, Malia, Noah and Laine; his former spouse and family friend Jeanne Grant of Hollis Center; two siblings, John Harmon and his wife Anitra of Palm Beach, Florida and Hal Harmon and his life companion Dorothy of Bradford, Pennsylvania; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania and Florida.Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, January 4th at the Church of the Prince of Peace located at 922 Main Street in the lower Mid-Town Mall. A funeral will follow at the church at 5:00 PM. Interment with military honors will be in the spring at the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution to CEC for Life c/o the Prince of Peace Church, P.O.
