Raymond Donald Hachey, 73 years old, of Springvale, ME died suddenly Wednesday evening June 16, 2004 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital in Sanford.Mr. Hachey was born on April 11, 1931 in Springvale, ME. He was the son of James and Josephine Dewire Hachey. He attended local schools, and worked at the Goodall Mills before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Hachey proudly served his country until 1955. For 15 years he worked as a serviceman for Pelletier and Levesque. For the past 30 years Mr. Hachey worked for Mapes Oil Co.Mr. Hachey was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes R.C. Church of Springvale; where he served as a greeter, and usher. He was an avid outdoorsman. Mountain climbing, and hiking were two of his favorite pastimes. He had hiked the Appalachian Trail, and was a two-time member of the 4,000 Footers Club of New England, and once had the companionship of his grandson Aaron in doing so. He also enjoyed playing tennis, archery, canoeing, prospecting, and most recently kayaking at the family camp on Loon Pond. Many knew Mr. Hachey as "the happy hiker". Mr. Hachey was past president of the Sanford Lions Club, an Eagle Scout, and Boy Scout Leader.Surviving is his wife of 52 years, and former childhood next-door neighbor Betty Day Hachey of Springvale; two daughters, Donna Rae Davis Crowell and her husband Herbert E. Crowell of Springvale, Melissa J. Baker and her husband Jack Baker of Sanford; four grandchildren, Aaron and Benjamin Davis of Springvale, Brett and Tasha Baker of Sanford, two uncles, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.A period of visitation will be held on Sunday June 20, 2004 from 2 PM to 5 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. On Monday June 21st please meet the family for a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Notre Dame de Lourdes R. C. Church of Springvale. Committal services will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery.In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Mr. Hachey's name to the Appalachian Mountain Club at 5 Joy St., Boston, MA 02108.
