Carl E. Gullans

Carl E. Gullans, Jr. 81, of Springvale, died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.Carl was born on December 5, 1925 in New Haven, CT to Carl and Helen Eastwood Gullans, Sr. He attended local schools and graduated from Branford High School in Branford, CT in 1943. Mr. Gullans joined the U.S. Navy right out of high school and served of the destroyer escort, Clarence L. Evans during WWII. After completing his enlistment, he attended Stone Business School in New Haven, CT. Following his graduation, he attended Yale University for post-graduate studies. In 1950, he married Barbara Hess and together they raised 5 children. During his working life, Carl owned and operated the Branford Business Bureau where he worked as an accountant. In 1990, he and his wife moved to the Sanford/Springvale area.Mr. Gullans was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served as an elder. He enjoyed hunting, gun collecting, cooking, gardening and reading. He enjoyed watching baseball and was and avid Boston Red Sox fan. One of his favorite past-times was telling stories about his many life experiences to people, especially his grandchildren. Carl will be remembered as a devoted and loving friend and family man and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Barbara Gullans of Springvale; 4 daughters, SaraJo Irish of Boise Idaho, Linda Ginchereau of Sanford, Eileen Murphy of Biddeford and Bonnie Cedeo of Benton, PA; a son, Eric Gullans of Boise, Idaho; two brothers, Bruce and Robert Gullans of Branford, CT; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.A period of visitation will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2007 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located on Westview Drive in Sanford. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main Street, Topsham ME, 04086.
