Donald E. Gould
Donald Ernest Gould, 86, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at The Newton Center following a short illness. Born in Sanford on April 24, 1922, he was the son of Arthur and Bernadette (Fournier) Gould. Growing up on Brook Street, he attended St. Ignatius School. In his youth, he worked in the Allied Shoe Shops in Springvale. In 1940 he worked in Goodall Mill #1 where he met his future wife, Laurette Auger.A WWII veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, serving in the South Pacific as an artillery specialist. He participated in the Battles of Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan and Tinian. He was in the first unit to enter Nagasaki following the atomic bombing. After the war, he returned to the Goodall Mills before accepting a position at American Cyanamid (now Cyro Industries) where he retired after more than 20 years. Following his retirement, he attended monthly breakfasts and yearly reunions with his Cyro friends. He also attended many Marine Corps reunions. He married Laurette Y. Auger on August 31, 1946. They were happily married for 62 years. They resided on High Street for almost 50 years, spent 20 wonderful winters in Pompano Beach, Florida, and more recently lived at Mayflower Place in Sanford.He was a member of the Elks and a lifetime member of the Springvale Knights of Columbus. Known for his dry wit and famous for his one-liners, he had many close friends. Having lost his mother at the age of five months, he was especially devoted to his three aunts and uncle who helped raise him. When his aunts were admitted to the Sanford Health Care Facility, he visited them daily for 20 years. He was an avid Red Sox fan and greatly enjoyed his time on the golf course in Florida. He was a life-long communicant of Holy Family Church.He is survived by his wife Laurette, daughter Muriel Gould of Cambridge, MA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was particularly close to his wife's family; George and Nancy (Kerrigan) Auger, Andy Auger, Roland and Pauline (Boucher) Auger-Landry, and Gilles and Claire (Lafrance) Auger. The family is especially indebted to Dr. Michael Lincourt and the staffs of Mayflower and Newton Center for their compassionate care. Funeral services will be held in the spring with burial at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.
