Alta M. Gavel
Alta M. Gavel, 88, of Sanford passed away peacefully Monday, December 29th. Alta was a lifelong resident of Sanford, born to Edward and Ida Gavel, sister to Hazel, Wayne, Vaughn, and Galen. While she never had children of her own, she was greatly loved by her nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews; spending much of her time driving them to music lessons, taking them on vacations to Alaska, Europe, Las Vegas, many trips to Disney World, and teaching them essential skills such as how to change a tire or use a jig-saw. Alta led a busy life, as an auxiliary police officer for Civil Defense, working for a time as a clerk of courts at the York County Court House, and later in life working as an office manager at Ecto Manufacturing. She loved riding her motorcycle, going fishing and boating, and spending time with her family and dog, Lullaby. Her strength and determination were an inspiration to three generations of her family and she will always be remembered for her independence and caring. She is survived by her sister Hazel and the many family members who lovingly called her Aunty.Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Saturday, January 3rd, at Church of the Prince of Peace, located in the lower Mid-Town Mall on Main Street in Sanford from 12:00-1:30. The funeral will follow at 2:00.
