Norman Joseph Ferland, 72 years old, of Sanford, ME died Saturday, December 22, 2007 at the H.D. Goodall Hospital with his family by his side. He fought a brief battle with cancer.Norman was born on October 3, 1935 in Sanford, ME. He was the son of the late Rene and Rella Michaud Ferland. He attended local schools, and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his nine year commitment to his country Norman worked at Cyro Plastics for 33 years retiring in 1993.Norman was a communicant of Holy Family Church, St. Therese of Liseux Parish in Sanford, and was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus.Repairing and restoring vintage automobiles was one of Normans' favorite pastimes. He also enjoyed woodworking, attending his grandchildren's athletic events, and keeping a meticulous eye on his lawn.Norman enjoyed spending time with his family. He was the kind of man that was always there when you needed help, and he will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. On September 25, 1954, Norman married the love of his life and wife of 51 years - Anita Lamontagne Ferland. (predeceased 2005).Together they raised a family of 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. They include Denise Allaire and her husband Roger of Shapleigh, Debra Stevens and her husband James of Sanford; two sons, Bruce Ferland and his wife Sue of Sanford, and Brian Ferland of Acton; eight grandchildren, Sean Allaire and his wife Jessi, Todd Allaire, Autumn, Erin and Heather Nanartowich, Hunter Stevens, Shawn Pullen and his wife Tara, Heather Stanley and her husband Paul, and four great-grandchildren, Trevor and Chase Stanley, Mckenna Nanartowich, Jada Pullen and was anxiously awaiting the birth of his 5th great-grandchild.Norman is survived by brothers Darcy Ferland of El Cajon, CA, Perley Ferland of Lebanon, ME and Ronald Ferland of Sanford, and sister Vi Gagliardi of Pondsville, CT.An 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Holy Family Church, St. Therese Parish on North Ave. in Sanford for Mr. Ferland. Burial will take place at St. Ignatius Cemetery in the spring of 2008.In lieu of flowers the Ferland family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, ME 04086 or Waban Projects, 5 Dunaway Drive, Sanford, ME 04073.
