Courtney DeWitt, 15, of Wells, died December 7 in Wells from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.She was born in Sanford on September 21, 1991, a daughter of Corey R. and Joleen (Thompson) DeWitt. She lived on Ruth Street in Sanford for several years and attended Margaret Chase Smith School and Willard School. The family moved to Wells 5 years ago where she attended Wells Junior High School. At the time of her death, she was a sophomore at Wells High School.Courtney loved the social aspect of school, hanging out with her friends. She played basketball in the junior high school and was a cheerleader for the freshman football team.She enjoyed doing Sudoku puzzles and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. For some reason, she collected shoe boxes and always ate her pizza from the toppings down. She was a NASCAR fan and usually made the trip to the fall race at Loudon, NH with her family, where she might "adopt" a traffic cone on the way home. She followed the careers of Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.On a more serious note, she was especially fond of the elderly and worked as a volunteer at The Pavilion in Sanford.Courtney was predeceased by her grandfather, Edward B. Thompson in 1989, great grandmother Margaret DeWitt in 1996 and by great grandmother Minnie Hartley in 2004.Survivors include her parents Corey and Joleen DeWitt and her sister Michaela DeWitt, all of Wells, her paternal grandparents, Robert and Nellie DeWitt of Medway, maternal grandparents Roger and Joan Manzo of Wells, aunts and uncles Jeff and Juanita DeWitt of E. Millinocket, Tom and Viola DeWitt of Medway, Alison and Shawn Leger of Windham, Edward C. Thompson of Memphis, TN, many cousins, the family pets Ruger and Angel and her best friends Austin, Mia and Mike.Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday at 11 AM at the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale with the Rev. Dennis Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery in Wells.Memorial contributions may be made to the Pavilion Activities Fund, 35 July Street, Sanford, ME 04073.
