Raymond G. Fortier

Raymond G. Fortier, 98, of Springvale, died on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Raymond was born on March 4, 1923 to Joseph and Eva (Camire) Fortier in Sanford where he grew up and attended local schools. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During his working life he was employed for 21 years at WT Grant's in Sanford. He went on to work and Cantin and Tucker Chevrolet where he stayed for 24 years until his retirement in 1985. Raymond was a devout Catholic and had been a communicant of St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church. He had been a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a 77-year member and past commander of The American Legion in Sanford. He was their youngest commander ever when he was elected to the post in 1947. He also served for 19 years on the Veterans Cemetery Committee and was very involved in helping to get the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery established in Springvale. Raymond always liked to keep himself busy. Whenever he was at home, he always found something to do and enjoyed puttering on things around his house. He also enjoyed traveling, listening to music and going fishing. He was a hard worker all of his life and took great pride in providing for his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Raymond was predeceased by his first wife, Irene M. (Bourque) Fortier in 1992 and by his second wife, Aline (Fountaine Ouellette) Fortier in 2020 and by his brother, Richard Fortier. Surviving are three children, James Fortier of Sanford, Carol Sewell of Lebanon and Robert Fortier of Sanford and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 17th at St Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, located on North Avenue in Sanford. Interment with military honors will be in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford. Due to increased risks from COVID, masks and proper social distancing will be required for all in attendance. Raymond's family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for the care and compassion shown to Raymond and his family during his stay there.
