SOUTH PORTLAND, MAINE - Mary H. Brennan, 89, of Boysenberry Drive, formerly of Depot Road, North Hatfield, MA, died Sunday at her residence, following a long period of declining health. Born in Montague City, she was a daughter of Patrick J. and Margaret (Ahearn) Hogan. She attended elementary parochial school in Greenfield and graduated from St. Michael's High School in Northampton. Mary then attended and graduated from the Cooley Dickinson School of Nursing, and received her R.N. in 1947. In November of 1947 she married John Brennan of Hatfield. Mary worked at Cooley Dickinson Hospital for 36 years, retiring in 1983 as supervisor of Maternity and Pediatrics. She and John joined the Hatfield Council on Aging and she was chairman several times. In 1994 Mary was awarded the Silver Dove Award by the governor for "outstanding work with the elderly." After the death of her husband in November of 1999, she moved to Maine to live with her son and his family. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and two sisters, Margaret Wolejko of Sunderland and Jean Chestnut of Springfield. Survivors include her son, David and his wife Cheryl of South Portland; three grandchildren, Terrence and his companion Wendy, Patrick and his companion Jessica, Hillary, and an "adopted" granddaughter Margaret Tuttle. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, among them Anne Sampson (Ray), Patricia Pebeel (Charles), James Wolejko, an "adopted" daughter Kathleen Sheehan, many cousins and close friends. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton. A 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at Our Lady of Grace Church, School Street, Hatfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Northampton. If desired, contributions may be made to the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Alumni Association School of Nursing Scholarship Fund, 30 Locust Street, Northampton, MA, 01061-5991, or The Hatfield Council on Aging, 59 Main Street, Hatfield, MA 01038.
