John Edward Bowman, Sr., 90, of Portland, died peacefully October 29, 2013 at his residence with his loving family by his side. He was born November 20, 1922 in Portland, a son of George William and Cecilia Wolfe Bowman. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and was a 1942 Portland High School graduate. John was one of ten children. He was one of five sons who served in World War II. He served in the United States Navy on the destroyer USS Charrett DD 581 with the Pacific Fleet. John married June M. Cole in March, 1946. He was a life long communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church and was an active member of the Holy Name Society at the Church. John was a carpenter and was "Clerk of the Works" in the construction of the Franklin Towers and Casco Bank buildings in Portland. He was the business agent for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Joiners of America Local Union No. 517 for twelve years; 1969-1982. He retired in 1982. John was secretary/treasurer of the AF of L Labor Temple. He has been a member of the UBCJA for 60+ years. He is an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus Council 101. John enjoyed golfing with his wife at Riverside Golf Course for many years. He and his wife also enjoyed many years of Square and Round Dancing. Another hobby of his was collecting and repairing locks. John was predeceased by his wife June on April 5, 2012, four brothers George, Raymond, Thomas and Robert and four sisters: Mildred B. Guidoboni, Margaret B. Thibeault, Helen B. Templeton and Anna B. Foley. Surviving are his daughter, Bonnie Lundquist and her husband Arnold H. of Bar Harbor; a son, John Edward Jr. wife Shelia G. Bowman of Portland; a sister, Virginia B. Remick; grandchildren, John E. III and his wife Deborah Bowman, Stephen and his wife Chantell Bowman, Christopher and his wife Katie Bowman, Eric Lundquist and his wife Alison, Caroline her husband Michael Noblet; eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 8-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 2 at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday; followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Donations in John's memory may be made to the Charity of One's Choice.Online condolences may be expressed below.
