SOUTH PORTLAND - Martin Marty J. Barron, 59, of South Portland, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at Maine Medical Center. Born in Milton, MA, Marty was the son of the late Martin A. and Joanne (Leavitt) Barron. He attended Holy Cross School, Cheverus High School, and St. Francis Xavier University of Nova Scotia. After college, Marty honorably served his country in the United States Navy. A pilot, he began by flying the P-3 Orion and continued his love of being airborne flying commercially for Delta Airlines. Marty also had a passion for education. He taught chemistry at Cheverus High School for 8 years and more recently worked as an Adjunct Professor in the Chemistry Department at Southern Maine Community College. A talented craftsman, Marty enjoyed carpentry and working on various jobs around the house. His proudest project and ultimate gift to his wife was the renovation of his cottage on Long Island, where he enjoyed spending summers with his family and friends. Marty was an avid runner and music fan who loved to crank tunes any chance he got. He learned to speak German as an adult and took many trips there to meet friends and explore. He loved a story, a joke, and a beer. He was a faithful communicant of St. Bartholomew Church in Cape Elizabeth. Above all else, Marty was devoted to his family. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He was so thrilled with every moment he had as the Papa Bear of his three granddaughters; Lucy, Carly, and Mary Mooney. He is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, Carlene Barron of South Portland; his children, Elizabeth Barron of Portland, Catie Brannelly and husband Sean of Portland, Andrew Barron and wife Sarah Jump of Portland, Brock Mooney and wife Katie of Kennebunk; his 3 adored grandchildren; sister, Meredith Schwarz and husband Mark of Scarborough; brother, William Barron and wife Delphine of Huntington Bay, NY; Sister and brother-in-laws: Roy and Deborah Barry of Naples, FL; Jim and Beverly VanBuskirk of Littleton, CO; Kenneth Brock of Emden, ME. 1. I was shocked and saddened this morning when my St Francis Xavier Alumni News arrived….did a quick scan , and my heart dropped when I read Marty’s name. I met your dad and husband my first day at St. FX….just by the luck of the draw… we sat at the same table in Physics lab and were partners in crime for the better part of that year…in later years , at the odd homecoming I used to tell his cohorts that he copied of me in physics!…not true..he was very bright and a capable fellow…for a Red Sox fan I guess! … it seems like only yesterday…this big lug with a big smile and a good story always …. never changed. Always fun loving , always the same, enjoyed a cold one, but enjoyed the valuable things in life. How I would have loved to have spent some years with him at his cottage enjoying his kids and grandkids. Knowing him as I did, I cannot imagine a better dad and grandfather. I’m looking at his picture in the background right now and feel fortunate to have known him….you meet so many special people at St FX, and he was one of the best. What a loss for you folks. You know they are special when you meet them at homecoming and you pick up life right where you left off. Clearly one of the nicest gentlemen I ever met….My deepest condolences. A great loss, but a great honor to have known him…I’ll say a prayer for the big lug at the chapel this week…may God Bless you all…

  3. I was so sad to read about Marty’s passing. I have lived here just long enough to know the man I met running on Shore Road or walking to or from SMCC. His friendly “Hi Girls”, meaning my two dogs and me, started my day out with a smile. Some of those early morning walks or runs Marty was the only person we met. The “girls” and I will miss him. My deepest sympathy.

  19. Carlene and family, I was stunned this morning to learn of Marty’s passing. He and I shared careers with Delta and some memorable adventures. There were many DL trips together, but the greatest adventure was the trip we took with another Delta colleague to visit and get to know some of the people and agencies involved with Canadian and European air traffic control over the N. Atlantic. I always considered Marty to be a consummate professional, but more importantly a good friend. I’m truly sorry for your loss.

    – Mark Cullings

  20. I am so sorry to hear about Marty. I used to live on Goudy Street just a few houses down from him and we used to get up early and run together. While running we would talk all about our families and life in general. I was so envious of him being a Navy pilot and loved hearing about his Navy days. Typical of Marty he brought me to the Brunswick Naval Air Station and had me sit in the flight simulator and taught me how to fly! He actually let me take off and land the plane at several simulated landing strips around the world. I like to think that I was one of his first students. He even let me use his flight gear and uniform to dress up as a pilot at a Halloween party once. I will always remember him as that guy who loved early morning runs and his life experiences. He was just a great guy.

Sometimes we were lucky enough to banter for a few minutes about whatever hot-button issue he was on his high horse about that morning! Most sincere condolences to all who loved him.
