Alice Katherine Atkins

PORTLAND - Alice Katherine Atkins, 97, formerly of Portland and North Windham, passed away on January 1, 2012 in Brunswick, ME. She was born in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada on November 27, 1914, a daughter of Clifford and Rachel Mauzerole Cassidy. She attended St. Michael's Academy in Chatham. Alice moved to Portland, ME in November, 1938. She married Philip R. Atkins in August, 1946. They lived for many years in Portland, and later renovated a cottage at Pettingill Pond in North Windham, into their year round home. Phil predeceased her in 1964. Alice operated several luncheonette counters in Portland, including locations on Congress Street, Exchange Street, and at the Airport. She was a former communicant of St. Dominic's Church, and of St. Louis Church, in Portland. Alice very much enjoyed playing bingo, showing the 'Luck of The Irish', she said, by frequently winning jackpot games. She was able to live independently until approximately 5 years ago when she moved to assisted living at the Thornton Oaks facility in Brunswick. The family is very grateful to Alice's nephew, Art Kilfoil, for all he did to help her during, and after, that transition. Alice was predeceased by three sisters (Veronica Flannigan, Clare Kilfoil, Helen Cassidy) and five brothers (Murray, David, Arthur, Louis, and Leonard Cassidy) who were very special to her. Survivors include her beloved sister, Rachel Ingemanson of Englewood, Florida; and two dear brothers, Clyne Cassidy of Miramichi, N.B., Canada, and Harold Cassidy of Richmond, B.C., Canada; many nieces and nephews, and their families. The family would like to extend special gratitude to the staff at Mere Point and The Garden at Thornton Hall Senior Health Center in Brunswick. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial a 9:00 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2011 at St. Louis Church, 279 Danforth Street, Portland. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland at a later date. I was very sad to hear of Aunt Alice’s passing. I will always remember her for her wonderful smile, her funny stories and her twinkling eyes. She was always a favorite aunt to me and she will live forever in my heart.
