CAPE ELIZABETH - Merrill R. Allen, 74, of Cape Elizabeth and Old Orchard Beach died Wednesday, October 19, 2011. Merrill was born in Bangor, Maine on March 30, 1937, the son of Edward and Florence (Markow) Allen. He graduated from Bangor High School and received his Pharmacy degree from the University of Connecticut. After college Merrill served in the Air National Guard. Merrill worked as a pharmacist in the family business (Allen Drug) in Bangor and started Adco Surgical Supply. He went on to work in sales for Picker X-Ray Corporation in their Boston District and then as Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Bio-Tek Instruments in Winooski, VT. Before retiring, he pursued a career in real estate representing ERA, Keller Williams and Prudential Prime Properties. Merrill was a past member of Holy Cross Church in South Portland and was involved with their RCIA. Merrill was a member of St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach where he was also involved with the RCIA and served as a Eucharistic Minister. In Old Orchard Beach, he was a member of the Neighborhood Crime Watch Committee as well as the Citizen's Police Academy. Merrill is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Maureen (Collins) Allen of Cape Elizabeth, three daughters Kristen, Drs. Rachel (Allen) and her husband Stephen Ward, Elizabeth, two brothers: Max and wife Froma Allen, Richard and wife Marlene Allen, one granddaughter Madeline Grace Ward, several nieces nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2011, from 2:30 to 5:30 pm at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. Prayers will be recited at the chapel at 10:15 on Monday, October 24, 2011, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
