SOUTH PORTLAND - Shirley Ann Aceto, 77, of South Portland, died November 4, 2011 at a Portland hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Portland a daughter of Joseph F. and Elsie B. Cushing Mitchell, Sr. Shirley attended Portland Schools and was a 1952 graduate of Deering High School. She married Ralph J. Aceto on January 28, 1956 at St. Joseph's Church. As a young woman she worked for Central Maine Power and W.T. Grants. Shirley owned and operated the family business alongside her husband and retired as Secretary and Treasurer of Aceto Acoustics. Shirley was a communicant of Holy Cross Church, a past member of the Cheverus Mother's Club and the Osewantha Garden Club. Her focus in life was her family. She enjoyed being a wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. Survivors include her beloved husband Ralph J. Aceto, Sr. of South Portland; four daughters, Jennifer Barrows and her husband Russell of South Portland, Brenda Grindle and her husband Steven of Portland, Diane Aceto-Morin of Buxton, Rebecca Aceto and her husband Jaime Burnham of Portland; three sons, Ralph J. Aceto, Jr and his wife Diane of South Portland, Vincent Aceto and his wife Lynn of Westbrook, Joseph Aceto and his wife Tracy of South Portland; a sister Madeline Wallace of Maine; a brother, Joseph Mitchell and his wife Mary of South Portland; 15 grandchildren, Amanda Aceto, Christina Aceto, Jessica Aceto, Megan Bremermann, Matthew Bremermann, Alicia Barrows, Zachary Barrows, Rachel Grindle, Hannah Whitten, Kelsey Morin, Jason Aceto, Alexandra Aceto, Jacqueline Merrill, Stephanie Aceto and Ashlee Aceto; one great-grandson, Brayden Barrows; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend their sincerest thank you to Dr. Cole, Katie Johnson, RN, from Mercy Emergency and the following nursing staff on the 2nd floor of Mercy's Critical Care Unit. To Dee, Shelly, Mary, Megan, Jessica, Michelle, Heather, Carol, Donna, Erin, Janine, Melissa, Linda and Renee, thank you for the impeccable loving care you gave our beloved mother and wife. To the VNA staff of Jennifer, Julie, Andy and Sheila, we appreciate all that you do and all that you have done for us. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, November 11 from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Conroy-Tully South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, at the South Portland Chapel followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main Street, South Portland, ME 04106.
