Philip M Smith
February 11, 1961 ~ February 5, 2021
South Portland - Philip M. Smith, II, 59, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
Born in Portland on February 11, 1961, Phil was the son of Philip M. Smith, Sr. and Shirley (Giroux) Berthiaume. He was raised in South Portland and attended Holy Cross school and South Portland High School. Following school, Phil married the late Kathleen Bonville. Together, they had their son, Philip M. Smith, III.
Fishing and the ocean were always big parts in Phil's life. Phil's first time on a boat was when he was only 3 months old on Cow Island. This beloved island always had a special place in Phil's heart. This love of the ocean came from his father, who always had boats and fished Casco Bay.
When he wasn't fishing, he could be found behind the wheel of a cab or dispatching. Phil was like a human GPS. Working for ABC Cab Company for years, Phil knew all the short cuts and could find a destination without ever using a map or a GPS.
Phil by and large was a homebody; he was very intellectual, loved to read, and could fix almost anything. Never a particularly religious person, his mother was delightfully surprised one day when Phil asked if he could accompany her to church. This became a normal routine until Phil's illness. This small act of going to church with his mother meant the world to Shirley.
Phil will be remembered as a very thoughtful person who never spoke an ill word about anyone. He will be greatly missed by those who love him.
Phil is predeceased by his father, Philip M. Smith, Sr.; brother, Joseph Smith; and step-father, Roland Berthiaume.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley Berthiaume of South Portland; son, Philip M. Smith, III and his partner, Danielle and her son Carter of Brownville; step-son, Ian Bonville and wife Leah of AZ; brother, Steven Smith and wife Angela of South Portland; step-siblings, Carl Berthiaume, Allen Berthiaume and Nichole Hamm; granddaughter, Chloe; step-grandson, Bentley. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
There will be no formal ceremony. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home of South Portland. To view Phil's memorial page or to share an online condolence, please visit www.ConroyTullyWalker.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Portland Food Cupboard, 130 Thadeus Street, South Portland, Maine 04106.
