Dorothy Hackett Stack

August 17, 1955 ~ June 24, 2018
Cape Elizabeth - Dorothy Hackett Stack passed away on June 24, 2018, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a short illness.
Dorothy was born in Fitchburg, MA on August 17, 1955, the third child of John C. and Pauline G. (Norwood) Hackett. She attended St. Bernard's Grammar School and graduated from St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School in 1973. Dorothy studied Accounting at North Adams State College and graduated in 1976. She later received her MBA from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN.
After graduation Dorothy worked as an accountant at a number of businesses in Fitchburg, Boston, and briefly in Munich, Germany. She became a United States Postal Inspector in 1981 and worked in St. Paul, MN and New York City. Dorothy met her husband Kevin at work, and they were married in 1987. After their marriage they resided in Red Bank, NJ. Dorothy stopped working after the birth of their first child. The family moved to Cape Elizabeth, ME in 1994. Dorothy later worked as a bookkeeper for the Catholic churches in Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, South Portland, and Portland.
Dorothy was a wonderful mother and loved being involved in her children's activities. She volunteered at Cape Elizabeth Schools, was a Girl Scout Leader, taught religious education at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, and was willing to help whenever she was needed. She enjoyed playing tennis, cooking and baking, scrabble games, and spending time with her friends and family. Dorothy was a voracious reader, often reading multiple books at once.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Kevin; her children, Clare, Grace, and Timothy; her sisters, Kathleen Brookhart and Mary Tavolieri; and many extended family members.
Visiting hours celebrating Dorothy's life will be held from 4:00PM to 8:00PM on Friday, June 29, 2018, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at St. Bartholomew Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy's name to the Thomas Memorial Library, 6 Scott Dyer Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107.
Kevin, Clare, Grace and Tim we are so sorry for your loss. You’ve been in our thoughts and prayers over the last few weeks and you will remain there in the weeks and months ahead. We have so many wonderful memories of Dot through the years. As my sister Robin’s best friend for more than 40 years she has been a fixture in our lives at family celebrations, times of loss and on many happy days by the beach and at GDI. We loved her and are so sad for all of you. We are sending love and prayers for you today. Love, Jill, Gary, Hannah and Carly.

Kevin, Clare, Grace and Tim, our deepest sympathy.
Dorothy exudes happiness. She can always find the joy.
She raised the twenty something gang, with love and laughter.
Dorothy Mae Hackett was named after my mother. She was strong like my Mom. Now, quickly and totally out of the blue she has joined my Mom in heaven. We are all heartbroken.
She lived a great life with Kevin, with whom she just celebrated 30 years of marriage. Her kids Clare, Grace and Tim were her purpose in life. They could not love her more.
Her sisters Kathleen and Margie will go on but a big piece of their existence is gone.
Cousins are your first and forever friends. You can just pick up where you left off. And the laughter comes from your toes.
I loved Dots. Until we meet again,
Rest In Peace, my beautiful cousin

Seems like another life, Kevin, when we were in the Morgan domicile in New York. When a phone rang at an empty desk, we’d hit “#4” to pick it up. If it was your desk, the hope was Dorothy would be on the other end. To a new inspector she was a like big sister, full of advice and encouragement, stories and laughter. She made any day better. I’m not sure if we ever met face to face but I missed those calls when you moved to Maine. Although we haven’t spoken since then, the world seems a bit dimmer knowing Dorothy isn’t in it. We are shocked by her passing and pray you, Clare, Grace and Tim will be comforted by the love with which she surrounded you. Dan and Joyce O’Sullivan

Dear Kevin, Clare, Grace and Timmy,
We are so very sorry for your loss. Dorothy was a very dynamic presence and dressed up as the Best Dorothy of Oz for halloween! Her physical presence has moved on but her spirit and memories live within you and so hope they bring you comfort in the days to come.

We were so saddened to hear about Dorothy’s passing. We left Cape Elizabeth 7 years ago and conversations with Dorothy will always be a wonderful memory for me – we worked together on girl scout events….and had daughters in the same class…..she was a person so full of life – always smiling, laughing, and ready to lend a hand to anyone.
