South Portland - Michael W. Hansen, 69, of Wescott Road, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at home.
Born in Portland on March 3, 1950, Mike was the son of the late John W. and Virginia (Cookson) Hansen. He was raised in South Portland on Mussey Street and graduated from South Portland High School in 1968.
At a New Year's Eve gathering in the late 1960's, Mike met a young woman named Julie Cribby. He was immediately interested in her. However, Julie wasn't thrilled with the thought of Mike when they first met, but his stubborn and persistent nature paid off. After several attempts to get Julie's attention, Mike pounced on the opportunity to fix her car on a snowy and wet night. With gratitude, Julie invited Mike over to her parent's home so he could get cleaned up. Neither of them knew it that night, but it would be the start of a nearly 50 year marriage. Mike and Julie (Cribby) Hansen were married on June 20, 1970 and began their family in South Portland. Over the years, there we undoubtedly difficult times as there is with any relationship, but the love and devotion they had for one another and their family was unbreakable. Mike and Julie were one of those couples who were meant to be together.
Mike worked in the heating industry for 47 years, retiring in 2016. Over the years, Mike used his knowledge and talents not only to help the customers he served, but also anyone else who had an issue. He was the type of guy that would drop what he was doing to help someone fix or clean their boiler, often without expecting any compensation. He just did it to be a good guy. His proudest accomplishment in his long career was installing the boiler for his son's business, Fore River Brewing Company.
If you knew Mike, you knew he was the type of guy who always put others before himself. Mike left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was the neighbor who would snow blow others driveways because he knew they needed to get to work; he was the mentor who would provide sound advice; he was the husband and father who would go above and beyond to offer love and support; and he was the "Bamp" who had a special, unique relationship with both of his grandchildren. Simply put, Mike was a good man. If you knew him, you considered yourself to be a lucky person.
Mike enjoyed many things in life. He enjoyed a cold Pepsi during Football Sundays, fishing and spending time with his family at camp on Forest Lake, doing yardwork while listening to music on his huge red headphones, cooking breakfast every Sunday morning for his children and watching NASCAR. However, Mike's primary source of enjoyment came from being Bamp to Tyler and Maddie. He loved those kids more than anything else in this world. He played with them, loved them unconditionally, was proud of Tyler's acceptance into Colby, and of Maddie's cheerleading, and he taught them so much about what it is to be a good person. As he would say to his grandchildren, I love you mostest.
Mike is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Julie Hansen of South Portland; his children, Michael J. Hansen and wife Melissa Bouchard Hansen of South Portland and Thomas J. Hansen and wife Nicole Nappi Hansen of Windham; the apples of his eye, Tyler M. Hansen and Madeline C. Hansen; siblings, Diane English and husband Frank of South Dakota, Donna Kalinyak and husband Robert of Cumberland, Daniel Darling of South Portland and Steven J. Hansen and wife Hildegard of South Portland.

I was truly saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. He was a great friend to my Dad and to me. I originally met Mike when he was working on my furnace. He always shared great stories about his love for his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He always asked about my family as well and wanted to know how everybody was doing. He was truly one of the nicest, kindest, generous, down-to-earth and caring souls that I have ever met. Once, there was a unique situation with my furnace. 4 technicians came over and deemed everything okay even though the problem was still there. That wasn’t good enough for Mike. He figured out the problem and fixed it. He then used that incident to train all the other technicians. He wasn’t satisfied until the job was done 100 % correctly. Mike will be sadly missed. My heart goes out to his family. Sending my prayers and deepest sympathy. Karen Serunian

We here at Irving are a family. We spend a lot of time together and sometimes I am sure it feels that we spend more time with each other than are our families. That being said, it must be mentioned that we have lost a very important member of our family over the weekend. Those of us that had the honor and pleasure to know him realize what a great loss this is for his entire family and friends alike. The short period that I was load builder here 2010-2011 I came to rely on Mike for any answer needed. He was always ready willing and able to assist, work wise or personal wise. His customers asked for him and, only him, by name. We have lost some customers now because he retired. There are not many weeks that go by, since he retired, that I do not have a customer ask for him still. (In the beginning it was weekly!) He was much loved and respected and will truly be missed. I never met Mike face to face, but I can tell you personally that when you spoke to Mike, that did not matter. He was the kind of person that made a difference and left a permanent imprint on your life. That imprint was always for the better. I will never forget him and I know many of you who knew him will not either. Who could forget that soothing, calming yet very strong voice! I am sure there are people at Irving who never met him before he retired, but know the name – yes, The Legend! He set some pretty big shoes to fill and, frankly, there will be no other that could ever fully fill them. That right there is a true measure of a man. Please take a moment at some point today to offer a moment of silence for him and strength for those he has left behind to carry on without him. He will truly be missed. Mike, rest in peace, my friend. I have no doubt that you are in God’s loving arms and much welcomed with a “well-done” true and faithful servant…………..Lisa Parker

Mike’s obituary captured who this man truly was. I only knew Mike through some furnace work he did at my Westbrook house in 2015-16. I had a particularly troublesome and puzzling issue and Mike came over several times to track down the source of the problem. We talked about the Alzheimer’s disease my husband had and Mike was quite empathetic about it. He treated Charlie with such tender respect. As you can guess, Mike made a couple of trips over to work on the furnace and neither charged us for labor nor for parts. Even after he retired from Irving and had been in the hospital and recovery for several months, he still came back again to solve the furnace issue. He even sent a sympathy card when Charlie passed away later that year. Mike will always have a special place in my heart and I will never forget his kindness toward us. What a role model for others. My sympathy goes out to each of you.
