South Portland - Durmont E. "Butch" Heal, Jr., 72, passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at his home.
Born in Sanford on November 23, 1945, Butch was the son of the late Durmont E. Heal, Sr. and Lillian (Foley) Heal. He grew up in Maine, and then moved to Florida where graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee in 1964.
After graduation, he moved back to Maine to marry Mary-Jo McCarthy on September 29, 1973. Butch and Mary-Jo had a wonderful life together and were a great team as they raised their family.
His well-known dry sense of humor lasted right through his last days. As an example, when he became ill and needed to sign documentation allowing Mary-Jo to make all medical related decisions, he remarked something to the effect of, "She's been making my decisions for me my entire life, how is this any different?". A shining example of being a fun loving man even while he faced a terminal illness.
Living in Biddeford and South Portland for most of his life, Butch was very particular about his lawn, knew a little about a lot, and was the man you wanted on your team when playing Trivia Pursuit. He was an avid bowler, loved working on older cars, enjoyed model boats and puzzles and was dedicated to his work as a meat cutter for Winn Dixie, IGA and Shaw's.
He never said it often, but his quiet presence and support expressed his genuine pride for each of his children. He was the type of dad that would cook pancakes and eggs on Sunday mornings, carve the turkey on Thanksgiving, attended sporting events, and encouraged his children throughout their lives. Most importantly, however, he lived, led and taught his children by example. He always helped anyone in need, did the right thing, and had a remarkable amount of patience.
Butch is survived by his wife, Mary-Jo Heal of South Portland; children, Brian Heal and wife Lara of Westbrook, Nicole Heal of South Portland and Colleen Heal and her significant other, Mike Matheson of Gorham. He was the loving Grampy of John and Josie Heal. His siblings, Lance Heal and Larinda Harris, also survive him. He had a close and special bond with Aunt Jane and Uncle Doug and Family, and his cousin Connie and Tom Minnervino.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, on Wednesday, August 15 from 3-6PM followed by a Celebration of Butch's life at 6PM. Burial will be private.

I work with Butch cutting meat at Shaw’s many different times over the years. He was a great man who loved his family. We had many great discussions talking about basketball and other sports. I know how much he cared for his family. He will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP Butch.
