South Portland- Richard J. Henward Sr., 76, of Karynel Drive died peacefully on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the Maine Veterans Home following a long illness.
Richard was born in Portland, Maine on August 19, 1942 the son of Charles and Barbara (Nugent) Henward. He graduated from Portland High School in the Class of 1960. After high school Richard enlisted in the United States Army.
On August 26, 1978 Richard married Shirley Herrick at the Church of God in Portland.
Richard served on the Portland Police force for several years before going on to serve as the Chief of Police in Freeport for several years. He then decided to venture into his own business where he owned and operated his own Cab Company, Casco Cab, which he ran for many years. In his later years he did private chauffeuring and odd jobs.
In his spare time, Richard played trumpet with the Saber Drum Corps in Portland and would also play taps for military funerals, for which he received an award from Buglers Across America. He was a life member of the South Portland American Legion Post #35. He loved all types of food, listening to many styles of music, especially big band and attending Drum Corps shows. Richard will be remembered as a family guy.
He was predeceased by a step daughter, Esther Stailing. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Henward of South Portland; two sons, Richard and Leone Henward Jr. of Westbrook, Charles Henward of Stetson; stepson, Peter and Barbara Schuman of Buxton; stepdaughter, Rhonda Davis of South Portland; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service for Richard will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 2:00PM at the American Legion Post #35, Broadway, South Portland, Maine.
