She attended local schools and graduated from South Portland HS in the class of 1957. On January 30, 1960 she married the love of her life Arvin D. "GE" Erskine at St. John's Church. Her son Jaimie said "Mom seemed to lose her zest for life when dad died on Thanksgiving Day 2000. I remember him bringing home a bright red rose for mom every single Friday right up until the day he passed away". Mary worked for New England Telephone Company in the Engineering Department, Fairchild Semi - Conductor as work leader in Quality Control, Fran-A-Grams as an office manager, Continental Airlines in security, Hannaford Supermarket, she currently was working as an usher for the Portland Sea Dogs a position she has held since opening day April 19, 1994. She loved her Sea Dog family, she served as a "Host Mom" for four Sea Dogs players and even wrote a poem about the lighthouse at Hadlock Field. She loved to be around people, baseball, and had many friends in the Major Leagues that she met at spring training at Winter Haven Red Sox Camp. When WPOR announced that they needed volunteers to load bales of hay in boxcars to send to South Carolina, Mary spent three days loading boxcars at Rigby Yard. In her spare-time she loved roller skating and played on a roller hockey team for several years. She enjoyed knitting, quilting, sewing, crocheting, travel, dancing and was able to play the piano, clarinet, accordion, guitar, xylophone and ukulele. She earned her motorcycle license taking her test in a snow storm. She loved riding around town in her red Mustang convertible and always commented that her grandkids were "The Best in the World". 1. I’m so saddened to hear about Mary. I clogged with Mary on the Casco Bay Cloggers team. She was fun to be around, always smiling and laughing. I have a special Casco Bay Clogger sweater that she knitted that I will treasure. -Julie D.

  6. Mom, thank you for being a second Mom to me for so many years. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories up to camp. You spoiled us at Christmas and loved to see our reaction! You did not talk much about your feelings but when you did, it was meaningful. You were talented in so many ways and could do whatever you put your mind to. You will be missed dearly by all of us. Please give Dad a big hug.

    – Louise Maxfield

  7. I’ll always remember you, Nana. Thank you for sharing your camp with me growing up and giving me the love for the water and ocean that I do today. The experiences I got to have there with you still live on today. I caught my first fish there, learned HOW to fish, learned how to jet ski, went tubing and water skiing, rode in a seaplane, things every child should experience but I got lucky. I miss you so dearly. I miss seeing you smile at the seadogs games, where I know you felt most at home. Thank you for hosting so many Christmas’s and thanksgivings, full of family and fun. I love you, Nana. I’m sorry I didn’t get to say goodbye in person. Rest In Peace. I know Grampy, the love of your life, is up there with you holding you.

    – Morgan

  8. Mary is woven into the very fabric of Hadlock Field. She would give a greeting and a warm smile to all Sea Dogs fans she came across, regardless of the time of day (or night), the weather, or the score! Mary would always stop by to say goodnight on her way home. She was able to bring a little sunshine even after a late-night, extra innings double header. I and so many others will miss her.
